It also brought up the topic of over-parenting. We are all moms in the book club and wondered, if those kids could survive through all of the neglect, are we over-parenting our kids just a tad too much these days? Should we do more to develop their independence?

It's been an interesting read and one that has also made me think of my own childhood as a homeless, abused child. Incredibly sad how often that happens in our society to kids.LiveMomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17501326566298297530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10718822.post-45250498276638112552007-08-06T16:29:00.000-05:002007-08-06T16:29:00.000-05:00That is exactly the view I came away with after se...That is exactly the view I came away with after seeing her - being amazed that there was so much love and so little anger.Patsy Terrellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03265729671827964868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10718822.post-82195791982465258742007-08-06T16:28:00.000-05:002007-08-06T16:28:00.000-05:00I think people who have no first hand experience w...I think people who have no first hand experience with poverty cannot possibly understand it. I remember a friend telling me his neighbor was trying to decide if he should pay the electric bill or the water bill, but decided to pay the electric bill because they could do with the washing machine easier than the cable. Of course, that's completely illogical.Patsy Terrellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03265729671827964868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10718822.post-24330520255634511652007-08-06T15:57:00.000-05:002007-08-06T15:57:00.000-05:00I just finished reading the book a few minutes ago...I just finished reading the book a few minutes ago and can tell you that I was on the edge of my seat for most of it, wondering if these children would ever be able to survive, let alone flourish. It's an incredible testament to the resiliency of children and the power of hope. I am, also, truly amazed at the lack of anger throughout the account. I have to believe that the horrific living conditions were somehow tempered with much love, though not conventional.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10718822.post-13175319675078082582007-07-27T15:25:00.000-05:002007-07-27T15:25:00.000-05:00not credible? I also don't know her personally, so have no inside knowledge of her life.

I do know that those of us who grow up in less than "ideal" circumstances learn there's not much point in villifying. You're just trying to move on. I also realize that people who had pretty normal backgrounds just cannot believe our realities - they don't meet common sense standards. But many of us grow up in situations that have very little to do with common sense. And we go through them day by day, just trying to push through to a time when we can be in charge of our own lives.

There's an interesting study that looks at trauma in children and how it affects them. Those who flourish tend to be those who can move on.

My motto in life is let it be, let it go and let it lie. There's not much point in anything else. Walls summed that up in her speech by saying she was a pragmatist.

I still have not had a chance to finish the book so don't know the specifics of the story - only what she spoke about. I want to read it when I can do so without too many interruptions.Patsy Terrellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03265729671827964868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10718822.post-18381057883812425932007-06-12T15:05:00.000-05:002007-06-12T15:05:00.000-05:00I found her book to be not credible as a memoir. If the accounts of neglect and abuse are true, the parents should be vilified, not honored. Why should I believe that Ms Walls is telling the truth "finally" and not just trying to sell books? Finding a 2k diamond ring in a pile of rotting wood?? Please, how about some critical thinking here!Kathy McKeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17341622743791556310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10718822.post-39478202550170881002007-02-09T20:39:00.000-06:002007-02-09T20:39:00.000-06:00Thanks for reading.
