Patsy, I must take a moment to play Devil's advocate here!
I agree with you on the whole, however there ARE quality programs that, in limited quantities, are quite beneficial and even *gasp* educational! In particular, I am thinking of the Baby Einstein dvd series. Of course, these are designed to help children develop skills and interests across a broad spectrum, as they are also designed to be used with parental interaction. There are other programs that encourage kids to get up and move, such as the Wiggles. I could name at least a half dozen more programs that address one or more facets of child development. I certainly agree that the majority of children spend entirely too much time in front of the television, but I also feel that some exposure to the truly *quality* programs can be quite beneficial to a child's development. (As well as giving Mom 30 minutes of peace and quiet ~ also beneficial to a child's development!) My 2 year old niece watches television every day, but only for a VERY limited amount of time. I don't feel her development has suffered in any way because of this. The key lies in moderation (a concept our society generally doesn't grasp) and parental discretion.

I agree, completely. But I would contend that children having LIMITED television time is a rare, rare, rare thing. Most children are watching 8-10 hours of television a day by the time they're 5. That's ridiculous. And it's not all that *they* are watching, they're often watching along with mom and dad. It all adds up to a LOT of television.
